I went to see Ronan's last Aussie concert which was held in Melbourne on the 2 February. The concert was poignant for two reasons, naturally it was the finalĀ  concert in his present tour so it involved a certain celebratory as well as sad feel that this was the last of this tour and secondly, it occurred coincidentally on the anniversary of his Mum's passing so his rendition of the song he penned for his Mum' This is Your Song' had added resonance.

There was also sadness when Ronan talked of the passing of Boyzone team member Stephen Gately and how lucky it was that Stephen's voice is on two of the tracks on the new album.

Ronan sang a reasonably even coverage of his most popular songs including those you would imagine such as the song that started his solo career 'When You Say Nothing At All', The wonderful 'Life is a Rollercoaster' which had most of the audience dancing and bopping in delight. A salute to his Irishness with 'Wild Mountain Thyme', and ended appropriately with 'The Long Goodbye' because it was a long goodbye as the audience didn't want the concert to be over.

The audience in Melbourne on this final show showered Ronan with affection, many people taking Ronan's short walk into the audience at the beginning of the concert as a cue to crowd around him almost mobbing him! this desire to have close contact continued throughout the concert with many running up to the stage extending their hands to be touched by Ronan, happily he obliged. Ronan was awarded for his heartfelt excellence in this concert by many of the audience choosing to give him a standing ovation during his rendition of 'Life is a Rollercoaster'.

Highlights of the night included a wild dance between Ronan and the bodhran player, really making bodhran playing look very cool! his duet 'last Thing on My Mind' with support act Aussie Tina Arena and 'We've Got Tonight' with longtime band member Jo were beautifully realised. There was also a salute to Aussie music with a rendition of Midnight Oil's 'Bed's are Burning'.

A very satisfying concert with a mixture of poignancy and fun and I think a very satisfying concert for Ronan too, so successful that I'm sure he will be headingĀ  back to Australia in the not too distant future.
